When the Europeans arrived in america in the sixteenth century, they noticed differences such as in skin color and behavioral differences, but they were considered uncivilized, and when the europeans started to enslave the africans, they did not pick by their skin color, they picked by gender because women were weak and feeble minded, to where as the man was strong and able bodied to be enslaved.
The roots of discrimination started when american women and african women were based off their work, while the africans work was taxed, the americans wasn't giving the thought to people that the africans did less work and could not work as well as the american.
One thing that was played a big part in discrimination against women was that societies thought it was inherently wrong to be able to have offspring and having a females body. There have been attempts to create an utopian society to where there was complete gender equality but the only factor that helped, and quite possibly the only reason they worked for some time was that they took out sex & reproduction out of the questions. For the average woman, having a family and a good paying is near to impossible because of discrimination.
Children may learn negative stereotypes from elderly people who have lived through to see women vote, which still may anger the elder if they don't like that women have been granted the ability to vote.
